    What the???

Did they ring the bell one lap early? Antoine seemed to know he had a lap left, but even the announcer thought they were done. the 7:3? on the clock as they were coming down the stretch should have been a dead giveaway....

On a serious note, that is really embarrassing. Making a farce of the competition. The announcer said ~7:10 into the race that it's a lap to go. Have to feel for Black and Sheffar.

Thibeault let up his last lap and still ran a 231 last km... i wonder what really happened with the lap counting/bell in this race. both sheffar and black seemed to really believe it was their last lap.
ya the officials need to be on this, but these guys really not check the clock at any point in the last 3min of running? you dont accidentally run a 30sec 3k pb off what would have seemed comfortable most of the way

Life pro tip, you've probably never ran faster than 9 minutes. Championship racing has nothing to do with the clock and everything to do with where your competitors are and focusing on winning the race. Time is irrelevant, citation every olympic 1500m final ever.

Its also fair to assume that it was a timing error, if your racing and hear the bell its difficult to quickly figure out if its the clock issue or a lap counting issue. I feel like timing issues are more common then race officials miscounting laps.

i dunno... none of the laval athletes or coaching staff seemed to have any issues figuring it out... athletes didnt kick early and kept running. coaches kept waving them on.

to anyone with the response "you've never done yada yada yada" maybe we have lol no championship racing isnt about time, but you still need to be aware of what you're doing..........

Says someone who clearly doesn't know what he is talking about. You have to be aware of the situation. The most experienced of the three runners wasn't fooled and won a race I believe he would have run had Black and Sheffar not made such a huge blunder.

Despite having run, significantly, faster than 9 minutes, I still do not understand how your comment is a "life pro tip." Also, you might want to look up the difference between "run" and "ran." Enrolling in English 100 might be of use to you...

Can't believe you're blaming the runners when the officials at a national competition not only rang the bell early, but also showed one lap to go AND stopped the clock. When one guy starts to go, don't tell me you're gonna let him go if it might be the last lap. Lucky for the laval guys that their coaches told them to keep going.

The clock stopping is irrelevant! Black and Sheffar started their run for the finish line long before that. When the bell rang, any experienced runner would have been surprised and then quickly dismiss it after a quick glance at the clock. 400m to go is a crucial moment in a somewhat tactical 3km race. Every runner in the field should have been aware of when they reached this point in the race.

oh so the last time you were in a national final running shoulder to shoulder with another guy you took the time to locate the clock to see what it was at? gimme a break. The only reason the laval guys kept going is because their coaches were screaming at them to do so.

Heard lap counter changed from 8 to 6 laps to go (Brant Stachel on twitter). So they were given incorrect information for over 1km. Makes sense why they went hard when they did.

Sure the official has part of the responsibility over this issue. But, every runners in the field also have their's. Guys, counting to 15 is part to racing the 3k. Thibeault knew perfectly how many laps he had to go and where he was in that race. And look at how he managed to stay with Black and Sheffar even though those two were kicking hard on the penultimate lap.

as someone who has had to lap count the indoor 3000, this is my nightmare scenario. But, I always keep a watch with me and keep track with that to double check (especially since most non-championship races have people being lapped). Having said that, two important points:

    1) Even though it sucks that the officials screwed up, ultimately it is still the responsibility of the runner to make sure this doesn't happen. Thibo did this and it served him well.

    2) The finish line official should be not only giving the runners how many laps they have left, but should be writing down each runners number as they do each lap. This keeps a tally on which runners have run how many laps. This ensures everyone is tracked and by doing this, an accurate count of laps is written down. If we want to be strict about it, they should also be writing down the split for each runner on each lap (but that rarely happens due to the amount of work involved and the amount of officials you need to do this properly). But if you look at the official, he's doing no such thing. He's just standing around.

    dreadful...... said 5 months ago

i don't know his name, but the track announcer, who is then on the stream as well, is dreadful. He is the same guy that did Olympic trials outdoors last summer. He has a nice voice, but:
    1) You should NEVER have the same person doing the announcing live at the track doing your stream - 2 totally different jobs, with much of the former required to give general meeting information and the latter should provide much more colour.
    2) the track side announcer should not be wandering around the track, but should be sitting somewhere with information and sheets, computer in front of him, while announcing. No other announcer walks around the track.
    3) take any of the videos and just play the sound (turn your computer around) and see if you can follow any of the races. You have no idea what is going on becuase this guy is NOT announcing...he is just yelling names / schools out in order. That is almost all he does....shout out names. When the feed crapped out yesterday, you could still hear him through the field stream, and i had no idea what was happening in the 4x800ms cause he is dreadful.

Someone needs to respectfully ask him to sit down, do more homework (colour/ preparation/ info sheets in front of him), and learn to announce - not just say names in order.

Gord is fine on the mic. He does his homework and he knows the sport. The problem is that he's one guy. For a big event, pair him with a spotter or a color guy who can back him up when something like this goes down.

dear Bi$$....indeed, Gord has a nice voice, but please just do this: (as i stated above)....

    3) take any of the videos and just play the sound (turn your computer around) and see if you can follow any of the races. You have no idea what is going on because this guy is NOT announcing...he is just yelling names / schools out in order. That is almost all he does....shout out names. When the feed crapped out yesterday, you could still hear him through the field stream, and i had no idea what was happening in the 4x800ms cause he is dreadful.

NOW...find a distance race on youtube with BBC announcers and just listen (not watch).....i'm not saying GOrd needs to be as good as Tim Hutchins, but come on....

and if needs help (as you have suggested) then why is he doing this alone, or alone at Olympic trials? And if needs a spotter, he should be up in the announcers booth overlooking the track, not down on the track. Amateur hour...

Afraid I disagree - I've only watched a few events, but he consistently is getting athletes names wrong, including switching names for the same athlete throughout the race, or getting the school wrong (i.e. Calgary vs. Guelph, or in the men's 3k where he suddenly started using a different athletes name when referring to Jack).

Also just repeating names of who is in the race isn't "doing homework" - theres no colour commentary, or discussion of the race at all, just saying names over and over

and here is what a couple of long-time track guru's think of the online content, mainly representative of the horrendous announcing.....

You just CAN'T have the same person doing on track announcing on the stream...and then the on-track announcer is, at best, a C-.

Is there a link to a compiled set of results?

As an alum, I would love to scroll through the events but not enough to click through the 50+ individual event links.
