How do Canadian schools recruit runners?

Do they even try to recruit the top runners? I don't get it. Who/when (or do??) they recruit?? Do they just wait until people approach them?

As a top hs runner I got a few letters when I was in grade 10 and 11 but then nothing after that, I had to reach out to the coaches

They go to OFSAA and talk to grade 11's plus they send out letters to grade 11's just make sure you have good grades and a big base.

Yes. Yes they do. They can send a letter to you through your high school since high school race results will indicate the name of your high school, or email you if they happen to have that info from a twilight meet you have entered. Usually towards the end of grade 11 in my past experience unless things have changed.

The same way US schools do. Some coaches are more active and aggressive than others; some schools have more resources for both recruiting and financial aid than others.

You are more likely to see coaches out looking at AC XC Nationals, OFSAA or other provincial high school championships, and AC Junior Nationals Track.

I've spoken to a few top HS runners about this and they said both American and Canadian coaches have sent them initial "are you interested" messages through Facebook.

The onus is on the athlete to reach out and contact schools don't sit on your hands waiting for letters to arrive. Get out there in Grade 10 and let coaches know you exist.

If you are the Provincial Champion they know about you but you still need to take the initiative.

Unless you are really good, only a few schools who regularly sign Canadians will "search you out". There is no database with North American rankings so unless they dig, they don't have easy access. The US kids are all ranked so they are much easier to search. My advice is to make it easy for the coaches who probably hate the recruiting process. Go on their websites and fill in their Recruiting Questionnaires (they all have them). If you want to invest some money, there are several recruiting websites that are pretty good (NCSA) is expensive but good.

It would be really helpful if Oldster chimed in since he's a university coach.

What does he look for and does he reach out to many HS athletes.
