Actually a pretty modest start to the season by historical standards. Is this a down year for U Sport?

Talent this year seems to have an increased spread across the country. Not so many top performers are coming from the OUA anymore

Who brought the officials from Edmonton to Windsor to count laps during the 4x800? Not a smart idea

Could not get any more live than they were, each jump/throw were displayed instantly.
Those who wait must be from the GTA.

Seems like it. Many good track athletes are going to the states to University instead of staying in Canada.

... wasn't the officials fault on this one! Was watching at the hand-off point at the track on Friday night and the Windsor runner jumped on the track after the 3rd lap, behind the officials back and took off. Then it snowballed and almost everyone else followed suit. Not sure why they aren't using the lap counter - kid's these days can't do math without a phone/calculator?

Not sure if the rules are the same or not, or if they've changed them to prevent things like this from happening, but when running a 4x800 at OU's several years ago, my wife was running the third leg and her anchor runner miscounted the laps and thought Sarah had another lap to go, she didn't. She had done four, but when she came into the zone and no one was waiting for her, she just kept pumping away., The anchor runner ran across the middle of the track to pick her up in the middle of the backstretch and get the baton.

I also recall a relay down in Windsor (OU's again) where an impatient Western runner couldn't be bothered to wait for his teammate and just grabbed a baton from the startled incoming UofT athlete.

    Ah, relays....

This hasn't been traditionally a super strong meet that people focus on.

4x400 and 4x800 use IAAF (now World Athletics) rules - 20m closed exchange zone.

4x200 in OUs (but not USport) is an open exchange - there is a start but no end. So your wife's scenario would be legit in a 4x2 but not 4x8.

(Although the official lining up the outgoing athletes should have ensured the anchor was in position.)

Because I had way too much time to kill at work, I decided to fact check this. Looking at the past five years, the winning performances for 2020 are fairly similar to the average. I don't think there is much to make of it.

    Men

Average winning performances over 5 years:
    600m: 1:21
    1000m: 2:28
    1500m: 3:52

    2020
    600m: 1:21
    1000m: 2:29
    1500m: 3:54

    Women

Average winning performance over 5 years
    600m: 1:34
    1000m: 2:50
    1500m: 4:30

    2020
    600m: 1:34
    1000m: 2:48
    1500m: 4:33

That's not what the rule book says.
