Andy Higgins

Sad news today hearing of the passing of Andy Higgins. Long time educator and coach of Olympic Bronze Medallist Dave Steen (1988 Decathlon) as well as World Silver Medallist Mike Smith. Andy was a world-class coach who, I suspect, was not given fair credit for his coaching accomplishment's outside of the sport. We all knew, but most Canadians were probably unaware of how good a coach he was. RIP Andy

I only had a year's exposure to Andy as a graduate student at U0fT, but I enjoyed him immensely. I applied so much of what I learned from him years after when I coached. I always felt privileged.

In Andy’s own words, he was a “terrific” person, friend and coach. His legacy lives on, in the form of people whom he impacted.

Trained under Andy for years, great track coach, better life coach. Any updates on funeral details?

Word is that on June 15th there will be a memorial for Andy at U of T's Varsity Stadium between the afternoon AO meet and the 800m night. Details to come.

That is not the correct death notice. He was still alive on the 5th

This notice is NOT for beloved University of Toronto, Andy Higgins. The gentlemen and location of internment in this notice is from Belfast, Ireland

Just to clear this up, that was NOT the same Andy Higgins. Here are the actual details from a statement from the U of T:

Andy Higgins was one of those very special individuals who came into our lives. He was a giant in the coaching world, he coached an Olympic bronze medalist, World Champs silver medalist, Commonwealth/PanAm Games medalists, I can go on and on. However, I believe his greatest accomplishment was the positive impact he left on those he coached

There will not be a service or funeral. Although extremely spiritual, Andy wasn't religious in the traditional way. On Saturday June 15th, at Varsity Stadium (6:00pm) we will be hosting a Celebration of Life for our treasured Andy. It would be wonderful to have as many of our athletic community attending as possible.

Carl Georgevski, Head Coach, University of Toronto

5:30 pm Saturday is the start, with music, speeches and pictures on the scoreboard of Andy’s life.

Andy was a great man. So much more than a coach. He never actually coached me, but our track lives intersected for 50 years! Long before most people on this board were involved in track, there was such a thing as a Michael Power v. Monarch Park dual meet each year, that was hotly contested.

Years later Andy and I had several meaningful talks about the place of track in the world, and Andy was reminding me to keep it in perspective..

Best wishes to all who will attend on Saturday.

Well said Mike. I consider myself fortunate to have had Andy around as I was starting as a coach as well. He had a way of encouraging you to have huge dreams while keeping your feet on the ground at the same time.
