Coach Recognition!

In light of the unfortunate loss of some outstanding coaches, that have contributed so much to our sport and to so many individuals, I would like to hear from as many people as possible about their past and present coaches. So that these coaches can hear about what they have given and meant to so many!

I would like to recognize Brad Morley as an outstanding coach, teacher and human being. Brad was my high school coach in the late 1980's at Owen Sound Collegiate where he was also an outstanding English teacher. I was unfortunately, one of those snot nosed little punks that thought that he knew everything and was faster than anyone! I deserved little of his coaching time but he never gave up on me! I never met my full potential in running but it wasn't because of Brad. He gave me every opportunity to succeed by providing the training, introducing me to the right people, taking me to big races so that I could move forward in my running career. My running career never progressed the way I had dreamt it but it was what Brad demonstrated that was a far greater gift! Like him, I went on to become a teacher and never forgot the patients that he showed me when teaching other young kids. I never stopped coaching kids and continue to give back in that way today. I hope that he reads this and knows how much his time and efforts have helped shape me into a better person. My daughters have also benefitted as a result of his guidance and both are far more accomplished runners than I ever was! Thanks for all that you have done for me, other athletes and my family! Hopefully, some day our paths will cross and I will be able to thank you personally!

I hope that he likes the patients and patience mistake because I'm sure that there were a lot of times that he wanted to make me a patient but showed a lot of patience! Lol!

My goodness! Dear Mr Mike K, you are a very kind fellow and am blushing at the praises you have heaped on me. I have some very clear memories from all of my coaching years, and it was a pleasure to be able to spend time with young aspiring athletes. I remember your speed quite clearly, too, but I don't recall you being the troublesome young man you have suggested. I'm happy to hear that you went into teaching and coaching; both fields need dedicated people, so your involvement is a benefit to both. Rose and I are in Guelph now, and loving retirement. If you are ever nearby, don't hesitate to get in touch. And thanks again for your generous comments. I might add, the coach who inspired and shaped me the most was Andy Higgins, head coach at U of T for many years. Sadly, Andy passed away this past weekend at 82 and he will be missed by many many people whose lives he touched in deep and abiding ways. So in a lovely way, whatever benefit you have taken from me and passed on to your daughters, we have Andy to thank. All good wishes to you and yours, Mike. Brad Morley

My first coach at U of T junior development and still my best coach to date. Loved his humour, knowledge and understanding. Made me a better runner for sure.
