Is 49 seconds a fast 400m time for male athletes?

Realistically, is 49 seconds a fast 400m time for male collegiate athletes?

49 Flat? Mercier converts it to a 35.06 indoors, which is approximately 90th percentile for Usports (28/246 on the 300m rankings is 35.06)
NCAA its mediocre. 49.00 ranks as the 396th fastest performance in NCAA div 1 this year on the indoor list.

You also get a true sense for the depth of the NCAA through the above info as well, as there are well over 1000 times registered for the 400m alone, and the depth of talent is nuts... There are 104 competitors between that 49.00s performance that is # 396 on the list, and the # 500 ranked runner at 49.37

    This thread intrigues me.

Some background: Running has been a huge part of my life for over 40 years. I once managed a 54.8sec 400m when Mulroney was PM. I was thrilled.

How many Canadians run 49sec today? 50? 200? I have no idea, but I don't think it is in the thousands.

The WR is 43sec. 49sec means you are 55m back. You can clearly see Wade's 6mm spikes as he crosses the line.

The OP asks if 49sec is fast. Various opinions ensued, citing rankings and stats. My humble opinion, given what I have written above is.......

    F%#K YES IT IS FAST.

That is relative...for a Canadian university kid you are like considered by many great...by American standards not even close. Many 800-1500 guys at the NCAA level could do that. It is not even a good American HS time for the most part. In many schools in Texas, you would not even make your team.

49 is not what it used to be...in the late 90s ofsaa would have 6-8 finalists running sub 50, with a couple in the 47 or better area..the last decade, 49 is unlikely to qualify for the finals...in the finals athletes may well run 50 or 49 but that is because they are no longer fresh, and a final will typically have 5 guys running 48.5 or better.

49 is still fast, its just not as magical...in Usport...a quality relay team will have atleast 2-3 guys that can run sub 50 while fresh out of the blocks...end of the meet is a different story.

49 almost gets you on the podium at OFSAA, I'd say that's pretty good. It's not crazy to see a 49 second runner break 48 in 3-4 years

49 has never been magical, but I can't think of any USport programs that couldn't use another 49 second guy

I think it comes down to what you would consider fast, fast on a local level vs fast on a regional level, provincial level & world level. On IAAF rankings for senior men’s 400 the last time on the rankings that I can find is 49.92 which is 17288 which is nothing special however compared to the local HS boy that doesn’t run you might win by 100-150m
