Portland Track Festival

Some great Canadian results at the Portland track festival. Anyone know why the guelph meet is scheduled so close to Portland? It looks like a lot of our long distance runners raced Portland instead of the guelph 10000m

Sure but most of the Canadians that raced the Portland 10000m flew in from Ontario. There were a lot of Ontario and Quebec athletes in Portland

I do not think it was 1 vs the other. The runners went to Portland for the competition and proximity to their home base. Guelph is a good meet if you live in Ontario but flights from Alberta and BC are not that cheap right now.

Have you ever run a 10k or 10 000m in June in southern Ontario? The best-case scenario is you get a "cool" evening that is ~20C, which is still a bit warm for a 10k, especially if humid. On average though, it is much more likely to be hotter than this. For shorter races, this is not so much of a factor.

Contrast to Portland/PNW, where it is almost guaranteed to be ideal or near ideal 10k conditions in the evening at this time of year. You can only take so many shots at a 10k in a season, and if your goal is to put down a fast time, it might be worth it to pony up the money to fly to Portland. The quality of the field in Portland is also likely to be better - Americans and college kids looking to extend their NCAA track seasons.

Not a knock against the Nationals/Inferno 10k, but it's really hard to compete against the reality of the volatility of Ontario spring/summer weather. The main allure of the race is that it is a National champs (lucrative from sponsorship/carding perspective/pride), and that it is close if you live in eastern Canada.

Yeah, I said it was expensive to fly from Alberta and BC to Guelph. Not from ontario to Portland.

That also wasnt the point I was making. It was supposed to be that the good athletes go where the competition is

I highly recommend athletes and fans attend this event. Even in an off year it attracts many of the top runners including a great contingent of Canadian runners.

We're out in Portland right now, and, yes, for distance athletes (and 10k runners in particular) looking for guaranteed good conditions, accurate pacing, and excellent competition, there is no equal to this meet. To make the most of your ticket cost, you can also stick around for the Stumptown meet the following Friday and hit a 5k too. The vibe at these meets is best described as "elite casual". There's a decent sized paying crowd in the stands, but athletes are allowed to come and go as they like, and to cheer one another from the infield. The result is a very nice co-mingling of Olympic medalists, aspiring national level athletes, and high schoolers. Much of what it means to be elite in this sport is demystified by experiences like this. We get to see that, at bottom, it's the same process for everyone-- warm up, line up, do your best, and let the chips fall where they may. You get to see, up close, established athletes having pretty ordinary days, up-and-comers offering a glimpse of the possible future, and everything in between, all without the restrictive trappings of other so-called "big" meets (like OFSAA!).
