USports 5000

What would it take for Usports to include a 5000m race?

This would only be beneficial to the sport and the championships

We can't count to 15, let alone 25. Hard pass.

be more interested in seeing the 3k become a 5k. the depth in usports isnt strong enough to support 15/3k/5k

Back in tbe dark ages of the 1980s, the CIAU ran 5000 for the guys and 3000 for the women. We should return to this ... for the sole reason of the entertainment value of watching Oldster lose his mind.

    Who's with me?

Maybe not right now. But I don't think the depth should be the reason we decide not to do something. I think if we believe it is the best option for the sport, it should be pushed through. I could see this as a development piece for Canadian distance runners. The more kids we can engage in 5k/10k on the track, the more we urge kids to train and develop in those distances. Look at how many 5k/10k competitive people we have on a global scale, it is very minimal. I think this can be something that is initiated at the collegiate level to potentially develop some more people in the sport.

5k indoors is tough race. Cracking 15 min is doable Any sub 8:30 3k can do that. It's the dry air in the building some makes it brutal. Plus you have to find officials that don't miscount laps..

ncaa has no trouble fitting in the 5000m, and on a 2 day schedule, and there is enough depth for this

    Thurs:
    600m heats
    60s

    Friday
    300m
    1000m
    3000m

    Saturday:
    600m final
    1500m
    5000m

Doable and would allow every athlete to double at least an event above or below their primary event. That said, the 3000m and the 5000m are pretty similar

Ten laps more than a 3k??? That’s just asking for a counting disaster.. After CIS in Edmonton, and reports of the same thing in Kamloops, maybe officials are having a bit too much trouble with this counting thing.

Mistakes happen. There are many many more races that don't have counting issues than races that do. Even then a good coach who is taking splits can help keep their athletes informed of how many more laps to go.

If an official can't remember to flip the little sign every lap he/she is probably too old or dumb to be officiating.
