Heard many reports from the runners that the course was closer to 8.5k via their gps watches. The times seem to confirm some of this. Not the fastest of days it appears because of this.

Just ran this course today and I completely agree, was definitely 400m or so past 8km. No way I'm posting faster times at Griak then I am at U of S open.

As everyone should know GPS is not 100% accurate. I talked to the U of S coaches and they said they wheeled out the course and it was slightly long (and slightly long means around 30m long, not the 400m as mentioned).

GPS can be inaccurate when there are lots of turns or poor sightlines to satellite (ie. trees, tall buildings). These typically result in underestimations due to missing data or undersampling.

Although I'm not familiar with the UofS course, I would suspect that 400m long might be reasonable; Thiel is a consistent 36:xx 10k runner, and I find it hard to believe she could barely squeak under 4 min k's for an 8k race in which she was not the winner. That would barely qualify as a tempo, assuming she is in anywhere near that shape.

When was the last time she ran 36:xx for 10k? Nice person but it's been a while since she has run anything close to that and to use her as a reference point to figure out if a course is a long or by how much is silly.

She ran 16:35 for 5000m back in 2016

Just looks at everyone's times, Pennock and Strueby's times were below average for them, on a somewhat simple course. There is no way everyone was running noticeably slower in the same race when weather was almost perfect. Yes GPS watches can be inaccurate but when many people were getting the same distance saying it's long that's gotta count for something then.

Also using a wheel on a course like UofS, it's easy for the wheel to not be as accurate with a bunch of small dips throughout the whole course

The Course changed a lot this year, previous years in was already about 200m long, which most times people didn't really care, however they cut only about 40-50m on a corner and then extended a straight away about 60-70m.

if you run the +/- on runners from athletes at sask last year, everyone on average got slower, indicating a longer course.

annnd I believe there was a thread on last years being long as well??

Can we please get more people that were not even at the race, let alone running it, speculate on the length of the course. Ridiculous to try to use any athletes times to speculate on length.

Thiel ran a hard race on a good course, props to Hufsmith on a great effort. The boys all went out and sent in on a warm, windy day on the praries. Don't doubt the west in the coming weeks.

Strueby ran just under 25 min solo for 8km a few weeks back at Cougar Trot (would assume he's a little faster than this over 8 km with some competition). Pennock beat him by a decent amount from the looks of it. Assuming Pennock is the strongest runner in the field here, and no one else that should be near the front had an off day, I'd say this course was most certainly long. The Sask course, from my own experience, has an extreme amount of turns, not an easy course. Lots of turns is roughly equivalent to a course with more hills.

Also this is cross-country. Every course is different. Placement matters more than times. Calgary comfortably took the title, even with their 4 and 5 having an off day from the looks of it (unless that's where they are for fitness). We all know every year lots of Ontario and BC teams run on very straight, flat courses, and Trackie gets hyped up to the moon by kids dropping 23-low 24 min 8km. Not saying the prairie teams are stronger, but they did have 2 All-Canadians last year. Give them some respect where it's due.

Right? People are looking at GPS in an XC race?

I don't even know why they publish times this way. They could just run a rank order, or show the distance behind the lead as +0:01, +0:05 etc. You see this in cycling and skiing where the absolute time is not relevant (courses vary) but the placement and gaps are.

Maybe the course ran long. Who cares, as long as it's within +/- 500m or so? I will also say it has a crazy amount of turning, including some challenging placements relative to hills, so yes it is a deceptively challenging course.

I chose Thiel because she is a very consistent performer who doesn't sandbag races. She's run in the 36:xx region many times on the roads/track in 2015, 2016. I'd be fairly confident that even if she's not precisely in that shape currently that she's most likely not in 32 minute 8k shape. That's a ~41 minute 10k.

Recency of a performance is not helpful for comparison purposes unless you have a good idea that the effort involved in both was similar. I take consistency over recency.

You still haven't provided any proof that she is capable of running 36:xx. The link you sent us to showed that she ran a solid 5000m time on the track in the summer of 2016 which doesn't necessarily make her a 36:xx 10k runner. But I'll help you out with a recent 10k result: https://runsignup.com/race/results/?raceId=41210#resultSetId-51778. She finished in 38th in case you were looking to find her.

If you can dig up a recent 10k result showing she has run 36:xx, then your "consistency vs recency" argument might actually mean something but as it stands right now, you are simply making things up.

My thoughts exactly. Clearly not concerned about the right things if you are arguing times on an XC course; particularly a Canadian XC course, which generally aren't glorified road races like many NCAA XC courses (see ND for example).

From year to year I love to read this amusing cross country running topic and conversation around apples and oranges, GPS nonsense, and sour grapes. People get out their GPS when they're annoyed that their competitors post PB times over the "same distance" during the cross country season. Rarely (if ever?) do I see someone post that they looked at their GPS and their cross country race course was 400m short. I love cross country running for this reason (among many other reasons) - it's about racing, and an intrinsic ability to run the best pace for the race, given the course and the conditions.

The beauty of XC is the simplicity of this team sport. You absolutely do not require any kind of timing method, or method of determining distance. These are irrelevant.

You administer the thing decidedly "low-tech", with The only necessities in XC administration being 1) that the course is clearly marked, 2) that you collect the popsicle sticks with the runners' placings on them 3) you are accurate when you total each team's placements.
