Skill Levels and Progression

How to Move Between BVPA Play Levels

The BVPA Skills Matrix

The BVPA Level of Play Assessment Tool

Why do skill levels matter?

Our goal is for every player to have fun while learning, improving, and growing in the game of pickleball. Playing with others of similar skill levels creates more competitive, enjoyable matches and provides the best environment for player development.

Skill levels generally progress through the following ratings: 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, and beyond at the professional level.

Mentorship opportunities and Player Development Clinics are key components of our program. They are designed to help players at every skill level build confidence, improve their game, and continue progressing.

Levels of Play

Novice 2.0-2.5 – Players new to the sport who are developing stronger and more consistent basic skills. Those wishing to move to Intermediate 3.0 will be assessed by BVPA members who are knowledgeable about the skills expected at the next level using the BVPA Level of Assessment Tool noted above.

Mentored sessions are clearly identified on the weekly court schedule. All mentoring follows the BVPA Skills Matrix, with standardized lesson plans used consistently by all volunteer mentors.

Intermediate 3.0 -  This is a commonly accepted pickleball designation for intermediate play.

Advanced 3.5 and up - A Challenge Process is available for Intermediate 3.0 players who wish to participate in BVPA Advanced sessions. This process also applies to new BVPA members who join the club and intend to play in Advanced sessions.

Moving Between Play Levels

Novice to Intermediate Assessments and Intermediate to Advanced Challenges are scheduled a few times a year. One free assessment/challenge per year per member, with a $10 fee for any additional assessment/challenge. Please see the document above for more details.
