Legion Youth National Championships

Island athletes recently returned from the Legion Youth National Track & Field Championships held in Langley, BC. This competition, which was hosted in Charlottetown last summer, has athletes compete in U16 and U18 age categories, and showcases the most talented young track and field athletes across the country. This year, PEI's small continguent of 12 athletes, most competing at the national stage for the first time, boasted 11 personal best performances and set 8 Provincial Legion Games Championship records.

Top performances came in the men's throws, with Summerside's Matthew Tanton leading the way with a 5th place finish in the U16 discus throw with a Provincial Legion Games record toss of 47.29m. Jack Perry also recorded three top 12 finishes in the U18 division, placing 7th in the shotput throw, 10th in the javelin, and 12th in the discus, with throws of 14.45m, 40.51m, and 38.91m respectively. His throws in the shotput and discus circles were also good enough for Provincial Legion Games records.

The girls team were not to be outdone. Constance Gilman's 11th place finish in the U18 shotput with a distance of 10.57m bettered the previous Provincial Games record. Tori Fitzpatrick is the new Provincial Legion Games record holder in both the U16 1200m and 2000m events, running times of 3:51.12 and 6:48.97. Lydia MacLeod also bettered the previous U16 300m record in a time of 44.30.

The U18 boys 4x100m relay team of Elijah Hood, Matthew Tanton, Ryan Merrett, and Jack Perry finished 6th in a time of 48.27. In the U16 girls medley relay, which involves teams running two 200m legs, a 400m, and an 800m, the Island team of Ashley Fitzpatrick, Tori Fitzpatrick, Kelly McCardle and Lydia MacLeod finished 7th in a time of 4:31.93, improving the previous record by almost 8 seconds.

CIS Championships

Summerside's Connor McGuire narrowly missed the podium in the 1500m at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) track and field championships on March 9th. McGuire was passed by Guelph's Ross Proudfoot with just meters to go to finish fourth in 3:52.87, he's best national finish to date and just off his provincial indoor record. The race was won by Windsor's Matt Walters in 3:50.16.

Connor also finished 7th in the 3000m race in a time of 8:30.93. The race was won in 8:08.13 by Kelly Wiebe of Regina.

Great job Connor, PEI is very proud of you!

AUS Championships

Congratulations to Connor McGuire (STFX), on his recent achievements at the AUS Track and Field Championships! Connor was named Male AUS Track Athlete of the Year, after claiming the 1500m and 3000m titles, and contributing to his team winning the 4x800m relay. Connor has qualified to compete at the CIS Championships at the University of Alberta from March 7-9. Good luck Connor!

Also representing PEI were Stephanie Sobey (DAL) - 60m and Kaitlyn Sobey (SMU) - 60m, 300m, 4x400m.

Stephanie was also a part of the Dalhousie women winning the overall conference title. Congratulations to all!

Legion Youth Championships

PEI played host to the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track & Field Championships in Charlottetown from Aug 17-19th. PEI sent our largest contingent in Championship history, with 22 athletes completing in both under-18 and under-16 categories. The previous largest team was a team of 15 sent to Sherbrooke, Quebec in 2002.

Many athletes achieved personal best performances, and a number of Island Legion Championships records were broken:

Top finisher was Jonathan Goyette in the U16 Boys Javelin competition. Jonathan's throw of 44.13m was a huge personal best, new midget record and was good enough for a 5th place finish.

Constance Gilman's toss of 9.99m in the U16 Girls Shot Put broke the previous record and gave her an 8th place finish.

In the U16 1200m races, Abbey Maclellan broke the previous record in a time of 4:00.38, and Ryan Merrett set a new standard with a 3:33.85 run.

New marks were set in the U16 300m races, with Brayden White's 39.04 run and Myriam Cyr's 45.77 performance.

Alex Cyr lowered the U18 Boys 3000m record with his 10th place performance in a time of 9:13.41.

The Girls U18 4x100m relay team of Niki Triantafillou, Amanda Harper, Brooke Gaudette & Bailey Smith bettered the previous record with a 52.79 8th place performance.

We would like to thank all the volunteers, parents, spectators, and of course the Royal Canadian Legion for making this event such a huge success.
