I wonder if we had the best ever Canadian team because of the shitstorm that was last years selection! Thanks to those coaches that got together to form a selection criteria to put together our best team. These coaches are looking out for the sport in Canada as a whole!

    Agreed!

Considering how much discussion there was last year, I'm surprised there isn't a multi-page thread this year about how much better the whole Chiba selection and actual performances were! Congrats to all involved this year!

Interesting, though, that the one athlete who had a disappointing run (almost three minutes behind the leg leader) is one whose personal coach was one of the official Ekiden coaches who decided the roster. The alternate, meanwhile, had beaten that athlete head-to-head in their only meeting in winning the National Road 5K this fall.

No disrespect at all to Jibril, who has had an excellent year and deserved his spot. But if the coach involved had been DST, I somehow think there would be all sorts of criticism here, given what happened last year.

I agree, Does anyone have any insight as to why Jibril was chosen? Did Raposo do this because it was his own athlete? or was Pier not ready for a 10 on the road? I doubt this as Pier ran a solid track 5k pb! I know they are different events, but shows that he is in shape!

CJ is the personal coach of Cliff, and she was selected as alternate. I don't think there was anything there. If it were me, I would choose Sami for a 10k and PO for a 5k leg. Not to say PO's not good over 10k. He's run sub-30. But so has Sami and he's also got that 66:05 half. I think both athletes are very close and either one would have been a good choice.

Thanks John! I'm just glad to see the race was full of people who actually run on the road this year. Not steeple athletes with no road results. Props once again to the coaches for coming up with a fair and effective selection criteria

All 8 athletes on the team had 2014 performances over 5k/5000m or 10k/10000m, a key aspect of the selection criteria; the Team coaches are now comparing apples to apples when deciding the legs and alternates. If anyone were to ask the two team coaches about their decision, they would likely say "We selected Jibril to run the second 10k leg because he has run faster over 10k this year." That would be difficult to legitimately criticize, regardless of the coaches involved.

Great team. Great communication with personal coaches by staff coaches. Great performances. Can we not celebrate our success without trying to find something to bash?

    John,
There is only one 5k leg for the men. I'm not sure having PO run the 5k leg instead of Lucas would have been a good decision. Also, Sami ran 1:04:56 for the half 4 weeks before the Ekiden. This may have helped with the decision to run him.

Just to clarify a few things. Jibril's personal coach is Hugh Cameron, his assistant, Eddie Raposo was the other coach on the trip. To prevent any bias, a selection criteria was set and followed. Eddie was responsible for the females and CJ the males , for obvious reasons. Decisions were made after much consultation with other knowledgeable coaches. Sami's performances lead to his selection. - hard to argue with a 1:04:56 half marathon performance four weeks before the Ekiden. Sami's leg was a very challenging one. All the athletes ran much slower than their PBs.- approximately one minute, as did Sami. Too say that Sami had a disappointing run is not fare to him. Chris Winter, this year's cross country champ ran 30:14 on the same leg last year. All the athletes and their personal coaches were informed of the decision three weeks in advance, so they could prepare accordingly. this team ran 2:09:28. 1 minute 34 seconds faster than any previous mixed Canadian team. Let's just leave it at that!

A 1:34 PB by team Canada is a very good sign for the state of the sport in our country. Comparing 2013 and 2014, the first 4 legs were faster this year and the final 2 legs slower; when you look at seconds/kilometer, the biggest drop off was actually in the final leg.

To be clear, I don't say this to slight Marchant who yet again ran a good leg, but to point out that despite her running 20s slower than last year, the team still ran their best time ever and somehow did it without any speed river athletes (referencing the Coolsaet quote from last year) including Gillis declining automatic selection. Hindsight is 20/20, but this makes me look back at the 2013 chiba fiasco with even more disgust.
