You've heard of Superman and Batman, but what about the Derk Knight? Gifted with an unbreakable body and an eccentric personality, Derrick "Derk" Evans is no ordinary superhero. Derk is a distance specialist hailing from Red Deer, Alberta and entering his final year as a Computer Science major and UVic Vike. Despite unconventional running biomechanics unseen since the likes of Paul McCloy, Derk has blazed some solid performances for the Vikes on all three surfaces. In fall 2017, he opened with an 8km PB of 25:00.9 and was consistently one of the Vikes top cross-country performers. In 2018, he equalled his 3000m indoor PB of 8:25, then showed several strong road race performances, including a 7th place overall finish in Victoria's TC 10k with a PB of 31:40. In this episode of "Vikes on the Mic", we chat with Derk to explore his story, including his feelings on XC vs. track, his secret to avoiding injuries, and even how to deal with ant infestations!
"Vikes on the Mic" is the show where we chat with current and former members of the University of Victoria Vikes XC and track team. Three current Vikes distance runners, Chet Georzen, Josh Kozelj, and Matt Noseworthy, are stoked to be your hosts. We hope you enjoy our much anticipated interview with the Derk Horse.
