“I teach others in a way that I wish I had been taught.”

In addition to teaching pickleball to well over 2000 new players, Leslie has coached more skilled players to help them improve.

Leslie stresses a solid foundation using mechanics and strategy. Her success comes from helping players understand the purpose and desired outcome through a series of drills and mentored play.

      • New this season - LADDER PLAY

We are introducing LADDER PLAY to our members this outdoor season.

        WHAT IS A LADDER?

A ladder is a format designed for players who want to challenge themselves and compete against other players of similar ability.

The format is designed so that players play others of similar skill level. A player’s ladder position is based on their winning percentage (ratio of points won to total points possible). Players will move up or down on the ladder based upon their winning percentage.

        HOW ARE BVPA LADDERS ORGANIZED?

The chart below describes our plan for our BVPA Ladders. As you can see, the Ladders are scheduled for Sundays and Wednesdays and each Ladder will be of 7- 8 weeks duration.

        Ladder Series

        Start Date

        End Date

        1

        Sunday, June 2

        Sunday, July 21

        2

        Wednesday, June 5

        Wednesday, July 24

        3

        Sunday, July 28

        Sunday, September 8

        4

        Wednesday, July 31

        Wednesday, September 11

Ladder play in June and September will be in the afternoons and Ladder play in July and August will be in the mornings.

Initially, interested BVPA members will be asked to register for a Series 1 Sunday Ladder Pool or a Series 2 Wednesday Ladder Pool.

Registered participants in each Ladder Pool will be positioned on the ladder by skill level. The Ladders are open to all levels so there will be Novice, Intermediate and Advanced players in each pool.

Then, each week, the regular session sign up will be sent out and Registered Ladder pool participants can sign up for their Ladder session. Remember that if you have signed up for the Sunday Ladder, for example, you may only play in the Sunday Ladder. You may not hop back and forth between the Ladders.

Court assignments will be made based on the participant’s ladder position. Play will be a 4 or 5 person round robin per court.

There will be a maximum of 20 spots for each Ladder play each week. Only Registered Ladder Pool participants may play in the Ladders.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO JOIN ONE OF OUR LADDERS

Registration for the Series 1 and 2 Ladders Pools will open on May 10 and close on May 17. Click HERE to go to the Ladder Play webpage.

You must commit to playing in your Ladder at least one half (50%) of the Ladder sessions. Be sure you can commit to playing regularly before you sign up.

Because we are testing the use of DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) as potentially our platform for future ratings information, you will need to sign up for your individual DUPR account. Sign up is easy and free. https://dashboard.dupr.com/login

Posting of the scores will be handled by Sue Cowitz. Thanks Sue!!

More detailed information about the Ladders will be sent to those who sign up for a Ladder Pool once the Ladder Pools are confirmed.

This is a new play format for us and we may need to make changes once we see how many members want to play in Ladders.

Questions? Ask Sue Cowitz at sue@bowvalleypickleball.org

        Thanks.

      • OUTDOOR PLAY Update

Buckle up, everyone! We have a lot of information to share in the next few days as we launch various outdoor play plans. Get ready for several emails in the next few days - all are important information for you.

Our 2024 Outdoor Pickleball Season at Veterans Park Courts begins on Monday, May 13.

Sign Ups for play the week of May 13 will open at 8:00 AM on Thursday May 9.

Then signups will open every Thursday morning at 8:00 AM for play each subsequent week.

You will receive an email prior to the sign up with a link to the signup site. This will also be posted on the BVPA website under the QUICK LINKS heading.

You may initially sign up for a maximum of two sessions only. Then, starting at 8:00 AM on the Sunday before the play week begins, you may sign up for additional sessions if there are spots still available.

We are scheduling for a maximum of 20 players per session and there will be a Waitlist if sessions are full.

You may only sign up for the level of play for which you are eligible. Signups are monitored and incorrect signups will be deleted.

Here is a “key” to decoding the abbreviations you will see on the schedule:

MXDDP-NOV (Mixed Doubles Different Partners for Novice 2.0 and 2.5 on separate courts)
MXDDP-ADV (Mixed Doubles Different Partners for Advanced)
MXDDP-INT (Mixed Doubles Different Partners for Intermediate 3.0)
LADDER- ALL (New this year - Ladder play- All levels) A separate email to members spells out the details of Ladder play at BVPA
SPD (Same Partner Doubles – couples, partners, friends play as a team throughout the session). If you are signing up to play in SPD with a specific partner, you and your partner must sign up individually.
OPEN (Open Play) Different levels play together

Here’s how you can help –

We need Session Captains who will “organize” the players, and keep track and report any rainout times. Your signup will ask if you are willing to Captain a session and we thank you mightily! An accompanying “Instructions for Captains” sheet will be made available to those interested in helping us out.
That’s all for now! Bring on the summer!

        Paddles up, everyone!

      • OUTDOOR SEASON

BVPA Outdoor Pickleball Season is Almost Here – Honest!

Click HERE to see the calendar for outdoor play in May and June. The calendar will change for July and August and will change again for September and October. It will also be accessible under “QUICK LINKS” on the BVPA website found HERE.

All outdoor play will be at Veterans Park Courts that will have newly painted pickleball court lines on it (soon). The Club has purchased four new improved portable nets that are available for club event use. If Larch Courts become available, a portion of our schedule will move to Larch Courts but we have no information about the status of Larch Courts at this time.

Outdoor play at Veterans Park Courts begins on May 13.

Court times are reduced in May due to unreliable weather and court enhancements by the Town of Canmore. The June schedule contains more court time.

Like last year, we will issue weekly signups which will open for sign up at 8:00 AM Thursday mornings for the upcoming week.

For May, your initial sign up is limited to two sessions per week. Then on Sundays at 8:00 AM, you may sign up for additional available sessions.

This year, we are offering Ladder play beginning on June 2. On Thursday May 2, you will be sent an email explaining how our Ladders will work and how you can participate.

This year, we are implementing a new and improved Wait List. If sessions are full, players will be waitlisted in the order in which they signed up for a session. When an opening occurs, the System will offer that spot to the player first on the Wait List. That player then has 12 hours to accept that spot. If that spot is not accepted, the System will offer the spot to the next person on the Waitlist. Think – “Snooze? You lose.”

Information about Leslie Srogen’s Skill Development Mentoring clinics will be sent out next week. These clinics are scheduled for June 19-21 and will only occupy one court per day.

        That’s all for now,

      • OUTDOOR PLAY STARTING MAY 13

BVPA Outdoor Play will be at Veterans Courts

Structural problems have made Larch Courts unplayable for the foreseeable future. We have no information about when or if Larch Courts might be available for play this outdoor season.

Therefore, all our BVPA Outdoor Play is being scheduled onto Veterans Courts. The Town of Canmore has been very supportive to ensure that our club play can continue as scheduled.

There will be short disruption of play at Veterans in late May or early June as the lines on Veterans Courts are refreshed. This is good news!

Our Outdoor Play Season Opens on May 13 at Veterans Courts

BVPA members may participate in club activities at our outdoor courts with no additional cost. Members’ 2024 membership fees are structured to cover the costs of outdoor court rentals.

Signs ups will go out on a weekly basis throughout the outdoor season and we will introduce some new offerings such as Ladder Play.

The Ladder Play roll out will look like this –

There will be two separate Ladder Play sessions each week on the outdoor schedule.

If you are interested, you need to sign up for the Ladder Pool once it is available. To sign up for the Ladder Pool, members may be at any level but must commit to being available to play in the Ladder at least one half of the summer. Ladder play will appeal to members who want more competitive play.

Once the Ladder Pools are established, participants will be ranked by skill level. We expect there will be Advanced, Intermediate and Novice in each pool.

Then, once the Ladders begin, signups will be part of the weekly signups. There will be a maximum of 20 spots per Ladder.

Ladder Play results will be recorded using the DUPR system (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating). This means each participant in the Ladders must sign up for the DUPR system and then the club will manage the recording of the scores on DUPR. We will send more detailed information about the Ladders and the DUPR system to those who sign up for Ladder play.

Many clubs in Canada are moving to adoption of DUPR as a system to identify players of similar playing ability and as our club grows, this is something we need more and more.

So, give this new format some thought. If you are interested, the first step will be to sign up for the Ladder Pool. We should have that link ready next week.

Balls, Paddles and Nets are for BVPA club events only.

This year, BVPA has purchased 4 nets, paddles and balls for club use only. Last year was a different scenario because the nets and loaner paddles were property of the town and intended for general use.

Our only courts are the 4 Veterans Park Courts (at 925 Street Canmore T1W 3K1) and we are organized by skill levels: Novice (2.5), Intermediate (3.0) and Advanced (3.5+).

See Quick Links on this webpage to see our Outdoor Play Schedule.

Our BVPA Guest Player Policy states that visitors are welcome to join the play at appropriate club events as long as there is room in the event.

There is no online means for visitors to determine whether a given session has available spots for visitors to join the play. Instead, we ask visitors to come to the courts at times as per the Outdoor Play Schedule and if there is space for you, you will gladly be welcomed to play with the BVPA members. Please choose the proper session for your realistic level of play.

There is a $10.00 fee per session to be paid in cash to the Session Captain. A liability waiver also needs to be read and signed prior to the start of play. Visiting players need to bring their own paddles.

                    2. If you expect to play several times and you want to be able to sign-up for sessions that suit you and be assured of a spot, you may want to join the Bow Valley Pickleball Association and become a member. The fee is only $75 and is valid until December 31, 2024. All information is on this website to join and discover the full benefits of BVPA membership.

                    3. If you have your own playing group and your own net and balls

You can book a court by navigating your way through an extensive sign-up process found at https://canmoretennis.ca/Website/Page/Home Court fees for Veterans Park are $20 per hour and are applied when you book. These 4 courts are shared by pickleball and tennis and both have prebooked times set aside for their respective club play only. Outside of prebooked club court times, there are available times for bookings by visitors.

Paddles up, everyone! Welcome to Canmore!
